New Exhibit Opening April 6th!
Cold War Fallout Shelters
- The film Oppenheimer depicts the people and plans as well as the production of the world’s first hydrogen bomb.
- After WWII, the stockpiling of increasingly powerful nuclear weapons became the focus of both the U.S. and the Soviet Union, despite the fear of citizens who had already witnessed sudden and massive loss of life due to governmental battles.
- Measures of civil defense centered on this looming threat were undertaken to provide some degree of control by, and for, ordinary people. That included the dissemination of public education materials, such as 1951’s “Duck and Cover” campaign featuring Bert the Turtle and the school-drill program of the same name.
- Emphasis was placed on the ability to survive nuclear detonation by taking the simplest of precautions.
