Opening February 2nd
Bags and Boxes, what stories do they hold?
They lurk in the dark and dusty corners of any military museum storeroom, boxes, footlockers, duffle bags, and other items that have come to rest in the institutions repository. They often arrive without a story, found in the attic of a purchased house, rescued from the curb on garbage day, purchased at a flea market, or just anonymously left by the museum door.
Frequently they just land in storage; sometimes they become filler in other exhibits, or get used as display stands.
Cast aside and forgotten.
However, many of these items offer clues to the stories of their past owners, tales of service and lives disrupted. Good memories, bad memories, and pride.
This exhibit looks into some of these seemingly mundane items from the museum collection, what stories do they hold? What clues do we follow to uncover the tale? What sources exist to help assemble the puzzle?
The Michigan Military Technical and Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the stories of Michigan citizens who served and sacrificed, here and abroad, from WWI to the present. Our 11,000 square foot Museum exhibits the actual equipment, weapons, uniforms and other artifacts that bear witness to the high cost of freedom.
